Course Description

It is clear from the research, that for students to be successful in the classroom, they need to possess certain attitudes and beliefs about themselves and their ability to learn. These attitudes and beliefs have been collectively categorized as students who possess a “growth mindset.” Meaning that these students believe their abilities to learn, grow, and develop are based upon their hard work, perseverance, practice, and dedication.  It is not the result of some genetic lottery where some individuals are lucky and receive the “gifted” gene, and others pull the “ordinary ” gene. What is even more important, is that research has shown that these beliefs and attitudes can be taught to students and have a significant impact upon improving student performance in the classroom.

In this class, we will look in-depth look at the specific beliefs and attitudes that constitute a “growth mindset.” We will contrast those beliefs with students who have a “fixed” or “static” mindset. It is essential that participants fully understand the differences between these beliefs and attitudes if they aim to teach it to their students.

Participants will be exposed to examples of activities and actions other educators have used and are using in their classrooms to instill and foster a growth mindset in their students. Examples will cover multiple grade levels and class subject matter. Participants will have opportunities to discuss with their peers and the instructor the feasibility of using these different activities and actions with their students. Identifying potential challenges associated with each activity or action and what changes they could make with those activities and actions to address the needs of their particular students.

Armed with the knowledge of the specific beliefs and attitudes associated with a growth mindset and examples provided, participants will then develop and implement activities and actions that they will use in their own classroom. They will measure the impact these activities and actions have upon student performance by establishing a baseline achievement for two of their students and tracking their progress before and after these activities and actions are implemented.

Finally, participants will use the data gathered to reflect and determine if they will continue using those specific activities and actions in the future, refine them in some way, or totally abandon them and or develop other activities and actions that foster a growth mindset in their students.

Specifics

This course consists of 3 modules. Each module has a PowerPoint presentation that you will watch and then complete the accompanying worksheets.

You can choose to have each module sent to you as you complete it, or we can send you all of the modules at the same time.

You will have up to 6 months to complete the class. Credit for the class can’t be granted sooner than one month after registering even if you complete all the modules before that time.

Once you have completed the class, you will receive an email from Brandman University with your student account. It will have a login and password for you to be able to access your grades and request a transcript.
