3 semester hours of graduate level professional development credits from University of Massachusetts Global.
Empower your students to thrive academically and personally by fostering a strong sense of self through Social Emotional Learning (SEL). This graduate-level course introduces educators to the ALOHA SEL model, a unique, culture-based approach to SEL that emphasizes the values of Akahai (Kindness), Lokahi (Unity), ʻOluʻolu (Pleasantness), Haʻahaʻa (Humility), and Ahonui (Patience-Perseverance). These values provide a foundational platform for creating a supportive and inclusive learning environment.
Participants will begin by understanding the importance of SEL and exploring the ALOHA values. The course guides teachers to assess the social emotional needs of their students, taking into account the cultural backgrounds and values that influence their decision-making and behaviors. By identifying these needs, teachers can develop strategies to connect with their students and support their social emotional growth.
Teachers will also learn to establish meaningful data points and benchmarks to measure the impact of their SEL initiatives. Whether focusing on attendance, behavior, participation, test scores, quality of work, or peer interactions, educators will implement targeted actions to positively influence these areas. Throughout the course, participants will assess and adjust their strategies, ensuring that their efforts effectively support their students’ growth.
Finally, the course culminates in a comprehensive reflection, where educators evaluate the impact of their actions on both their students and themselves. This reflection will not only solidify their learning but also guide their future professional growth, ensuring they leave the course with a clear plan for continued success in their teaching practice.
